  • THE RE-OPENING OF MOUNT KINABALU CLIMB

    Sep 22, 2015 | 00:26 am

Warmest Greetings from LOTUS ASIA TOURS SDN BHD... Sabah Advisory Monday, August 17, 2015 1200 hours The Sabah Tourism Board wishes to inform and assure that Sabah, Malaysian Borneo including KOTA KINABALU the Capital City is fine and was not damaged by the earthquake that occurred on 05 June 2015. It is business as usual in Sabah and KOTA KINABALU. The capital city is named after the majestic Mount Kinabalu but both are sited in different locations. The Capital City KOTA KINABALU is by the sea. Whereas Mount Kinabalu is in the interior. The Kinabalu Park and Mt Kinabalu Summit Climb: The earthquake occurred in Sabah on Friday 5June 2015 at 07:15a.m. (GMT 12.15hr) at 5.9 Richter scale, for 30 seconds. The epicentre was north of Ranau at 5.980°North and 116.525°East, which is at Mount Kinabalu. Tremors were briefly felt throughout Sabah, Brunei and Sarawak. The tremors caused rock-slides on Mount Kinabalu. Heavy rain on the mountain caused soil-erosions and land-slides on the mountain, causing the rivers to become ‘rivers of mud’ and causing villagers living on the foot of Mount Kinabalu to be without drinking water. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives and the injured. Falling rocks and boulders caused the tragic deaths of 18 mountain climbers, including mountain guides; and 11 wounded. Ten (10) of the deceased were students and teachers from Tanjong Katong Primary School, Singapore. It was the School’s Seventh Year of mountain climbing at Via Ferratta Mountain Torq, the world's highest Via Ferrata located in a UNESCO World Heritage site. The villagers who were evacuated from their homes at the foot of Mount Kinabalu over concerns of land and mud slides, triggered by tremors and heavy rain, returned to their homes on 20th June.  Due to the earthquake incident, below are some time-lines: An experimental climb was held on August 8 for climbers, including rangers, mountain guides and members of the media. Geo-technical studies were carried out and after much deliberation, we are pleased to announce that Mount Kinabalu will be fully operational by December 1. Trail from Timpohon to Laban Rata (only) will be opened on September 1 and the trail from Laban Rata to Summit will be opened on December 1. The daily number of climbers will be revised to 100. The Masilau Resort area will remain CLOSED indefinitely, as the access bridge and road were washed away by the mud-flood. Some Chalets were also badly damaged. The 2015 Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon, (17th-18th October) is CANCELLED and all Registration Fees will be refunded. Sabah remain fully accessible and operational. Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), the Eastern Gateway to Malaysia and busiest Airport after Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), was and is fully operational. All flights, domestic and international flights were on schedule and not affected by the incident.  Offices, Shopping Malls, Hotels & Resorts, banks, schools including Primary, Kindergartens and Nursery Schools and the Tamu-tamu, Markets, Entertainment & Nightlife are operating as usual. • UNESCO delegates laud Singapore’s nomination of Botanic Gardens as World Heritage Site

    Jul 9, 2015 | 00:16 am

UNESCO delegates laud Singapore’s nomination of Botanic Gardens as World Heritage Site UNESCO delegates laud Singapore’s nomination of Botanic Gardens as World Heritage Site BONN: All 21 members of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee were so impressed with Singapore's nomination bid that every single one of them expressed their support and congratulations – an uncommon sight in the history of the committee's deliberations – even before the final decision to list the Singapore Botanic Gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site was delivered on Saturday (Jul 4).   At the start of the session to assess Singapore’s nomination, Ms Ruchira Kamboj, India’s permanent delegate to UNESCO who also chaired the session, said: “I must add here that each and every committee member wishes to take the floor on this nomination.”   By the time the eighth speaker spoke, some committee members had already started walking up to the Singapore delegation to offer their congratulations, even though the final results were yet to be announced.   The Botanic Gardens joins a list of 11 other newly-inscribed World Heritage Sites announced so far by the committee at the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Bonn, Germany.   Speaking on Singapore’s nomination bid, Ms Maria Theresa P Lazaro, the Philippines’ permanent delegate to UNESCO, said the well-preserved site illustrates the British tropical botanic gardens that has been playing a key role in advances in scientific knowledge in the world. She also lauded the gardens’ exceptional plant collection, the digital inventories of living plants and archival plans, among other things.   “WELL-PREPARED” NOMINATION DOSSIER   Other delegates praised the nomination dossier, describing it as “well-prepared”, and a “perfect example of how (a) nomination should be presented”.   Mr Jose Filipe Mendes Moraes Cabral, Portugal’s permanent delegate to UNESCO, said: “With more than 150 years of history, the 74-hectare gardens hold an unique and significant place in the history of Singapore and the region and have succeeded in encapsulating natural and cultural heritage over all these years.”   Mr Huseyin Avni Botsali, Turkey’s permanent delegate to UNESCO said the inscription of Botanic Gardens as a World Heritage Site was a “source of inspiration”. He added that Singapore’s “remarkable commitment to the state of integrity of the site has overwhelmed” the committee.   “This small state with the obligation of maximizing the use of every square centimetre of land is making a very generous contribution by creating the site. We believe Singapore will not only have its first site inscribed by the Botanic Gardens, but it will become a leader in this area, and inspire and lead all other interested parties and stakeholders who have similar sites,” he said.   Speaking to the Singapore media on the sidelines of the session, UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre director Kishore Rao said the committee was unanimous in its approval of the recommendation from the International Council on Monuments and Sites’ (Icomos), to list Botanic Gardens as a World Heritage Site. He noted that the members recognised that the gardens’ values were outstanding, and “therefore felt that they needed[…]

  • ASEAN tourist industry is booming with intra-ASEAN travellers

    Sep 29, 2011 | 23:38 pm

Wednesday, Sep 28, 2011 The Association of South-east Asian Nations (ASEAN) region is at a crossroads. With an average growth rate of more than 6 per cent last year, the region has achieved remarkable economic success recently and now accounts for 10 per cent of combined Asian GDP. What about its tourist industry? With impressive economic growth, plenty of resources and top tourist attractions, today the ASEAN is in a better position to celebrate this year's World Tourism Day with joy and pride as its tourist industry has been enjoying double-digit growth in recent years. ASEAN, the 10 nations of which reflect a world of wonders and diversity, has numerous world-class tourist destinations. With tourist paradises like Bali, Phuket, Langkawi and Singapore, historic monuments like Borobudur, Prambanan and Angkor Wat, the modern Petronas twin towers, pristine beaches and friendly people, ASEAN is indeed Asia's "Perfect 10 Paradise". Around 73 million tourists - 47 per cent or 34 million of them from intra-ASEAN travel - visited ASEAN countries in 2010, an 11 per cent increase from 65 million tourists in 2009. This huge intra-ASEAN travel indicates that the region is on the right track to establish an ASEAN Community in the years to come. "As part of the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Plan (ATSP) 2011-2015, the member countries are now jointly promoting the whole region to attract tourists from non-ASEAN countries. The tourism industry will grow further after the implementation of regional connectivity plan," ASEAN deputy secretary-general for ASEAN Economic Community Pushpanathan Sundram said recently. The CEO of the region's leading budget carrier, Air Asia X, an affiliate of Malaysia's Air Asia, Azran Osman-Rani, is optimistic about future growth in ASEAN tourism. "We are a big believer in ASEAN. We want to promote ourselves as an ASEAN airliner," Azran said recently in Singapore. The Air Asia group, Azran said, wants to build its brand "Truly ASEAN" and recruit cabin crew from the 10 ASEAN countries. Regional tourism stakeholders under the banner of ASEAN Tourism Forum recently launched the ambitious regional tourism campaign called "South-east Asia: Feel the Warmth" to boost tourism. ASEAN members also have different tourism marketing slogans, such as Vietnam's a Different Orient, the Philippines' So Beautiful, Amazing Thailand Always Amazes You, Malaysia Truly Asia and Uniquely Singapore. What about Indonesia? Indonesia's tourism slogans are "Wonderful Indonesia", Indonesia Ultimate in Diversity and My Indonesia - Just a Smile Away. Copyright © 2011. Singapore Press Holdings Ltd

  • Singapore: Growth in tourists by 15%

    Jan 5, 2011 | 22:41 pm

Inbound tourism sets up records in Singapore. October 2010 was a record October for one of the "Asian tigers". In total, Singapore in October was attended by 980,000 people, which is 15.8% higher than the same period last year. Australia, China, India, Indonesia and Malaysia - that's five main suppliers of tourist traffic to Singapore. These countries account for more than half of all registered visitors in October 2010. Also October 2010 was marked by a sharp increase in the number of tourists to Singapore from such countries as South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines. The growth of tourist traffic from South Korea increased in comparison with the previous year by 80%, from Thailand – by 60%. October – is the time of exhibitions in Singapore. This partly explains the sharp increase in tourist numbers. It is worth noting that Singapore has increased not only the number of tourists, but also the number of overnight stays in the hotels. The total number of overnight stays was amounted to 3.7 million, which is a 13% increase compared with last year, according to asiatraveltips.com. After three quarters of 2010, Singapore has demonstrated also growth of tourist revenues, which include revenues from shopping, sightseeing and recreation. Here the main role is played by Indonesia, India and China, which citizens are account for the biggest travel expenses. Their expenses have increased by one third compared with last year. Among the most active European tourists in Singapore were British. Despite the fact that the number of tourists from the UK fell by 1% according to the first three quarters, their travel expenses increased by 19%.   Cottages for Holidays com (c) 2007-2009

  • 2010 a great year for Singapore's tourism industry

    Dec 23, 2010 | 00:04 am

2010 a great year for Singapore's tourism industry By Travis Teo | Posted: 16 December 2010 2042 hrs             SINGAPORE : It has been a great year for tourism in Singapore, with more visitors and more high-spending ones. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) estimates that tourist arrivals this year will grow around 25 per cent from 2009 to hit about 12 million visitors. At the same time, it expects tourism receipts to grow almost 50 per cent on-year, reaching as much as S$18.5 billion. STB is optimistic about the industry's prospects going into the new year. It said the higher growth in receipts compared with arrivals means the average visitor here is spending more. These include Malaysian tourists who are arriving here by the busloads. And some 3,000 of them reportedly head to the two integrated resorts (IRs) daily - to gamble and to shop. But Malaysian politicians such as Johor's Datuk Tee Siew Kiong have raised concerns over the outflow of money from their country, estimating that Malaysians spent S$3 million per day on gaming in Singapore. Tan Khee Giap, an economist and associate professor at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, said: "When they come to Singapore, they look at the map, they will see the bigger countries surrounding us, so they are directly benefiting from the overspilling effect of our IR-driven tourism. "So if they look at the long term, instead of complaining those tourists come into Singapore, they should get themselves prepared for more tourists." While Singapore's IRs have been a huge success, some industry watchers said the Republic must be on guard from increasing competition for gaming dollars in the region. Song Seng Wun, regional economist at CIMB said: "Take Macau as an example. When they first started out, it was just casinos and more casinos. More recently, they are also adopting an integrated resort type of approach towards the gaming industry, mainly because they have seen how the two IRs here have turned out, and how well it seems to be working at this juncture." Overall, though, the outlook for Singapore IRs is strong, with casino revenues expected to roughly double to US$5.5 billion next year, according to consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers. Professor Tan said: "The tourism hub is the mother of all hubs. Because you have a tourism hub, you can have financial services, health care services, education services...In the past, we lacked the critical mass and all these could not take place..." The two integrated resorts are expected to be fully operational next year. STB said that besides the IRs, there are also other drivers for growth in the tourism industry next year. Specifically, it points out that the number of business meetings had soared around the Singapore F1 Grand Prix this year. Aw Kah Peng, chief executive of the Singapore Tourism Board, said: "Singapore is already a base for many companies who want to do business in Asia but who are looking for a base to put their business, and[…]

  • World Expo Volunteers Train To Become Ambassadors For Singapore

    Mar 30, 2010 | 00:14 am

Singapore, 26 March 2010 – The Singapore Pavilion will see 60 volunteers give up their personal time to become ambassadors for Singapore at the Shanghai World Expo this year. With this being Singapore’s largest undertaking at any World Exposition to date, the team of volunteers will undergo a specially tailored three-day training programme to prepare them for their stint. Two training sessions will be conducted, one in Singapore from 26 to 28 March and the other in Shanghai from 16 to 18 April. This is to cater to the volunteers who are currently located in either place. Developed by the Singapore Tourism Board with the help of NTUC Learning Hub, the programme will guide volunteers on service etiquette, cultural norms in China as well as the latest developments in Singapore related to tourism and the Expo’s theme of urban sustainability. Most importantly, the programme aims to infuse volunteers with much enthusiasm and passion so that they can bring the Singapore experience to Singapore Pavilion visitors. Commenting on the training programme, Mr Zee Yoong Kang, CEO of NTUC LearningHub said, “Building upon our years of training experience, NTUC LearningHub has developed a three-day training programme with experiential learning as a key component for the volunteers. The Pavilion is a showcase of Singapore to an international audience and the volunteers will be an integral part of the experience. Our training will place emphasis on Singaporean values through interactive activities and role playing. Through this, the volunteers will then be able to deliver experiences with a Singapore touch to visitors to the Pavilion.” The recruitment process started in December last year at the local tertiary institutions. In addition, Singaporeans based in Shanghai or with experience working in China were recruited. “The World Expo takes place only once every five years and we wanted to engage students in this rare opportunity to gain exposure in one of the world’s fastest growing economy as well as experience the world coming together at the same time. We started off the volunteer recruitment process at the tertiary institutions and were pleasantly surprised to see applicants from different walks of life, all wanting to represent Singapore. Drawing on their personal experiences of Singapore, these volunteers will play an important role to complement and complete the Singapore experience at the pavilion.” said Ms Leong See Kay, Director, World Expo 2010, Singapore Tourism Board. Aside from the tertiary student profile, the list of volunteers also includes Singaporean students currently studying in Shanghai’s Fudan University, a businesswoman and an ex-beauty queen who is actively involved in charity work in Shanghai. While most of them are Singaporeans, Malaysians and mainland Chinese, have also volunteered and been chosen to volunteer with the Singapore Pavilion. Summing it up, 21-year-old Li Jun Yi, who speaks four languages, said, “As a Singaporean, I feel that it is my responsibility to introduce Singapore to the world. This is a rare opportunity and I believe it would be a great one to build friendships and life experiences.” Volunteers[…]

  • OPENING ADDRESS BY MR S ISWARAN, SENIOR MINISTER OF STATE FOR TRADE & INDUSTRY AND EDUCATION, AT THE SINGAPORE TOURISM BOARD (STB) TOURISM INDUSTRY CONFERENCE (TIC) AT RESORTS WORLD SENTOSA, COMPASS BALLROOM EAST ON FRIDAY, 5 MARCH 2010, 0935HRS

    Mar 24, 2010 | 04:11 am

Ladies and Gentlemen,   Good morning   Introduction 1                    I am pleased to join you at this year’s Tourism Industry Conference.  This annual forum is an occasion for tourism industry stakeholders to take stock of the past year and look ahead to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.   Resilience Amidst Challenges Global Economic Downturn 2                    It would not be an overstatement to say that 2009 was an exceptionally challenging year.  The deepest global economic recession since the Great Depression and the outbreak of the H1N1 virus soon after, made for challenging times in the tourism industry. The forecasts were dismal.  The World Bank projected that global GDP would contract by 1.7 per cent in 2009.  International tourist arrivals and global tourism receipts were expected to decline by 4 and 6 per cent respectively.  STB anticipated that visitor arrivals to Singapore in 2009 would fall to between 9 and 9.5 million, and tourism receipts to be in the range of $12 to $12.5 million.    Industry has held up better than expected 3                    Despite that downbeat backdrop, our tourism sector proved to be resilient and delivered a creditable performance.  Visitor arrivals last year exceeded STB’s forecast (9 to 9.5 million) to reach 9.7 million.  At $12.4 billion, our tourism receipts also reached the upper end of the expected range ($12 to $12.5 billion).  Employment growth in the hotel and retail sectors started to pick up in the third quarter of 2009, in contrast to the previous downward trend.     Improvement in growth, led by Asia 4                    Looking ahead, there are good reasons to be optimistic about the opportunities that lie ahead for our tourism industry.  The UN World Tourism Organisation says that international tourism arrivals will grow by 3 to 4 per cent this year.  Asia is expected to lead this trend with a growth of at least 5 per cent – symptomatic of the broader economic shifts that are taking place.   5                    This bodes well for Singapore, and there are early indications of dividends from this macro trend.  Visitor arrivals registered overall positive growth in the last quarter of 2009 and this momentum continued into 2010 with a record 908,000 visitors in January.     Singapore: Well-Positioned to Ride the Recovery   6                    As the global economy led by Asia embarks on the recovery path, Singapore is well-positioned to ride this growth trajectory.  Our key enabling attributes are connectivity, the ability to capture mindshare and create memorable experiences. Let me elaborate.   Improved Connectivity 7                    Our lattice of connections to Asia has made us a key node in the region, and the network continues to grow.  Last year, Changi Airport established 14 new city links including destinations in Asia such as Ipoh, Kuantan and Shantou.  Six airlines, like India’s Kingfisher Airlines and Malaysia’s Firefly, have also commenced operations at Changi.  Jetstar Asia has committed to make Singapore its largest air hub in Asia for both short and long haul operations.     Capturing Asian Mindshare 8                   […]

  • SINGAPORE GETS PERSONAL: Uniquely Singapore evolves into YourSingapore

    Mar 7, 2010 | 21:49 pm

Singapore – March 5th, 2010: The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has today launched an evolution of Singapore’s destination brand – from “Uniquely Singapore” to “YourSingapore” – which underpins Singapore’s strengths as a destination, that is, an experience which can be easily personalised thanks to the concentration of sights, sounds, tastes, culture and attractions coupled with unparalleled user-centricity.   As a brand, YourSingapore articulates Singapore’s uniqueness and captures what travellers seek – a personal travel experience. Such a personalised travel experience offers an emotional reward of empowerment and liberation that allows visitors to travel on their own terms, according to their individual needs, preference and interests.   YourSingapore differentiates Singapore’s value proposition from that of competitors; ensuring Singapore remains relevant and compelling to today’s travellers, as brand equity and brand recall have an impact on visitor arrivals and tourism receipts. It delivers on Singapore’s promise to provide a concentration of multi-faceted and user-centric travel experiences as well as positions the destination as one that is future-facing and inspiring; one where visitors are invited to make their virtual experience of Singapore a reality.   At the heart of the campaign is a holistic digital approach that includes a new website, significant investment into search engine marketing, blogger engagement, mobile, social media and travel e-commerce. These platforms will engage visitors’ pre, during and post arrival and will be aggressively promoted.   www.yoursingapore.com is an innovative and interactive platform that allows travellers to conceptualise and plan their individual Singapore travel itinerary in a user-friendly manner. The campaign website facilitates sharing of experiences among travellers and local residents alike, and will be powered by up-to-date multimedia content about all things Singapore.  The website www.yoursingapore.com will deliver a new virtual experience that no other destination website currently offers.    In the past few years, the way that people plan and book travel has fundamentally shifted from passive content consumption to the active engagement of empowered individuals, primarily due to the dominance of digital and social media. Video on demand, online news, blogs and websites that enable social interaction have changed the way that travellers seek and obtain information. YourSingapore is a response to the pervasive influence of digital media and the rise of virtual communities, as well as consumer demands for personalised travel plans.   A NATURAL EVOLUTION OF THE UNIQUELY SINGAPORE BRAND   Recognising the successful branding efforts of the Uniquely Singapore campaign over the last five years, it was clear that the next chapter in the brand story would necessarily be an evolution, a natural transition, and not an overhaul.    Launched in 2004, Uniquely Singapore sought to build on Singapore’s position as a must-visit destination globally – one with an exciting range of vibrant, trendy and memorable experiences for discerning leisure or business travellers; delivering a unique, personal experience, which is beyond what words alone can convey. Uniquely Singapore built the foundation for key concepts that are crystallized in YourSingapore, namely its concentration of offerings which are easily accessible and user-centric, empowering travellers[…]

  • Singapore Tourism Board Forecasts Record Numbers for 2010 and Unveils "YourSingapore" Destination Brand

    Mar 7, 2010 | 21:44 pm

Forecasts underscore confidence in the recovery of the tourism industry. Evolved destination brand empowers visitors to personalise their experience. 5 March 2009, Singapore – The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) today announced its forecasts for the tourism industry for 2010: 11.5 – 12.5 million in visitor arrivals and S$17.5 – S$18.5 billion in tourism receipts. The STB also announced the evolution of Singapore’s destination brand, from “Uniquely Singapore” to “YourSingapore”, at the Tourism Industry Conference 2010. “YourSingapore” was unveiled by Senior Minster of State for Trade & Industry and Education, Mr S Iswaran, to close to 800 industry partners.   Held at Resorts World Sentosa, the Tourism Industry Conference, themed Redesigning the Tourism Experience, served as a platform for STB to share its plans for 2010 and beyond, as well as to allow industry partners to jointly disucss how to tackle the challenges ahead and capitalise on growth opportunities for the industry.   Commenting on the outlook for the industry, Ms Aw Kah Peng, STB’s Chief Executive, said “Despite last year being an exceptionally challenging one, the tourism industry weathered it credibly. With the global travel industry expected to recover this year and with Singapore offering an even more compelling suite of tourism experiences, including the two Integrated Resorts (IRs) that open this year, we are confident that the sector will be able to register its best performance to date.”   The optimistic forecasts for Singapore come on the back of a positive outlook for the tourism industry globally in 2010, with Asia expected to lead the growth[1], as well as a rebound in the performance of Singapore’s tourism sector seen in the final quarter of 2009.   Re-designing the Tourism Experience   2010 will see the much anticipated opening of both the Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands that will raise the bar in terms of what visitors can experience in Singapore - ranging from attractions to accommodation, dining to retail options, and MICE venues to gaming. The two IRs will complement the exciting year round calendar of leisure and business events that includes new events such as the Asia Fashion Exchange, the Youth Olympic Games and LIVE! Singapore, to returning signature events such as the SINGTEL SINGAPORE FORMULA ONE™ GRAND PRIX, F1 ROCKS™ and Singapore International Water Week. Collectively, they will enhance Singapore’s stature as a vibrant global city with a distinctive lifestyle that draws repeat visitors.   “We have seen many initiatives undertaken in recent years that have contributed towards a more vibrant and diverse tourism landscape. With the exciting line up of tourism experiences that will be available this year, 2010 will be a milestone year for the tourism industry. For visitors, Singapore will be that much more differentiated. Their Singapore experience will be one that centres around them, with a wide array of choices to enjoy, bringing about a unique experience that is personalised to their individual preference,” said Ms Aw.   Singapore’s transformation, however, extends beyond 2010.
